History
- Pre-Columbian Era: Arica was inhabited by various indigenous cultures before the arrival of the Spanish. The Chinchorro culture, known for their advanced mummification techniques dating back over 7,000 years, is notable among them.
- Spanish Conquest: Arica was founded as a Spanish city in 1570 by the conquistador Lucas Martínez de Begazo. It served as a strategic port during the Spanish colonial period in South America.
- Battle of Arica (1880): During the War of the Pacific (1879-1883), Arica was the scene of the famous Battle of Arica. Chilean troops, led by Colonel Francisco Bolognesi, defended the city against Peruvian forces. The battle ended with the capture of the city by Chile, marking a significant event in the national histories of both countries.
- Annexation to Chile: Following the war, Arica was annexed by Chile under the Treaty of Ancón in 1883, solidifying its status as Chilean territory.
- Economic Development: Throughout the 20th century, Arica experienced significant economic development, partly due to its strategic position as a major port for international trade, especially after the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914.
- Territorial Change: In 1929, Chile and Peru signed the Treaty of Lima, which established the border between the two countries and definitively placed Arica within Chilean territory. It is administratively part of the Arica and Parinacota Region since its creation in 2007.
- Cultural Development: Today, Arica is known for its cultural diversity, beaches, and pleasant climate. It hosts important festivals and cultural events that attract both residents and tourists alike.
The history of Arica reflects its strategic importance, conflicts, and evolution as an integral part of Chile’s development, particularly in the northern region of the country.
